How the backsplash is calculated

  • 1Area = counter run length × backsplash height (typically 450–600 mm, or 18–24 in, between counter and wall cabinets)
  • 2Tile count: area ÷ tile (or mosaic sheet) face area
  • 3Waste: 10% for straight/brick bond, 15% for herringbone and diagonal
  • 4Adhesive: ~3.5 kg/m², about 0.7 lb per sq ft, for small-format tiles
  • 5Grout: from tile perimeter, joint width and tile thickness — small tiles use disproportionately more
  • 6Round to whole boxes/sheets; keep spares from the same batch

Worked example

Kitchen backsplash: 3 m of counter run × 0.5 m high = 1.5 m² — 10 ft by 20 in, 16 sq ft. Mosaic sheets 300×300 mm (12 × 12 in), straight lay.

With 10% waste: 1.65 m² (18 sq ft) → 19 sheets, approximately 6 kg of adhesive — 13 lb — and 1 kg of grout.

Frequently asked questions

How much tile do I need for a kitchen backsplash?

Typical backsplashes run 1.5–3 m² (15–30 sq ft): counter run length × the 450–600 mm gap to the wall cabinets, minus windows. Measure the actual run — L-shaped kitchens add up fast.

How many subway tiles per square foot?

Classic 3×6 in subway tiles: 8 per sq ft (≈ 86 per m²) before waste. With 10% waste, a 20 sq ft backsplash needs about 176 tiles — check boxes-per-m² on the carton.

Do mosaic sheets count as one tile?

Yes — calculate with the sheet size (usually 300×300 mm, or 12 × 12 in), not the individual chips. Sheets cut with a utility knife between chips, which is why mosaics waste less around outlets than large tiles.

How much waste for a herringbone backsplash?

15% — every row ends in an angled cut, and small tiles are unforgiving on layout errors. Straight and brick-bond layouts need only 10%.

Adhesive mat or thinset for a backsplash?

Thinset (cement adhesive) is the durable default and required around heat sources like ranges. Self-adhesive mats are quicker for light tiles in dry areas, but check the mat's weight and heat rating first.
