How the box count is calculated
- 1Room area = length × width
- 2Waste: 5–7% straight lay, 10–15% for herringbone or rooms with many cuts
- 3Boxes: area with waste ÷ coverage per box (printed on the box label)
- 4Underlayment: only if the planks don't have it pre-attached — check the product
- 5Trim: room perimeter − door widths, +10% for mitres
- 6Round up to whole boxes and keep spares from the same batch
Worked example
Kitchen: 5 × 3.2 m = 16 m². Straight lay (7% waste), boxes covering 2.09 m² each.
Area with waste: 17.1 m² → 9 boxes of LVP, plus trim for approximately 15 lm of perimeter.
Frequently asked questions
How many boxes of vinyl plank for 500 sq ft?
500 sq ft = 46.5 m². With 7% waste: 49.7 m². At a typical 2.09 m² (22.5 sq ft) per box: 24 boxes. Coverage varies by plank size — check the box label.
Is vinyl plank flooring waterproof?
The planks themselves are — LVP has a plastic core, so surface water doesn't swell it like laminate. That makes it the standard choice for bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms. Water can still pass through joints to the subfloor, so wipe up standing water.
Do I need underlayment under LVP?
Many rigid-core products come with attached underlayment — adding more can void the warranty and make joints flex. Bare planks on concrete need a thin underlayment with a vapour barrier. Follow the product specification.
Can I install vinyl plank over tile?
Yes, if the tile floor is flat within about 3 mm over 2 m and well bonded. Fill wide or deep grout lines with levelling compound first, or thin planks will telegraph the pattern through.
What is the difference between LVP and laminate?
LVP has a waterproof plastic core; laminate has a wood-fibre core that swells when wet but typically feels harder underfoot and resists dents better. For wet rooms choose LVP; elsewhere it's preference and budget.
